Houston Chronicle Covers JD Fields’ $24M Acquisition of L.B. Foster’s Piling Division
In a strategic move covered by the Houston Chronicle, JD Fields & Company announced its $24 million acquisition of the steel piling division of Pittsburgh-based L.B. Foster Co. The deal represents a bold step toward domestic supply chain dominance and vertical integration, reinforcing JD Fields’ commitment to meeting the evolving demands of U.S. infrastructure and civil engineering markets.
JD Fields, a division of The Fields Companies, is known for supplying steel pipe and piling systems for energy, transportation, and port development. With over 150,000 tons of steel in inventory, this acquisition further positions the company as a leader in domestic piling distribution at a time when U.S. firms are prioritizing “Buy American” strategies to overcome shipping bottlenecks and supply chain volatility.
The newly acquired assets include a steel yard in California and facilities that produce structural products from flat sheet steel to wide-flange beams. This deal, along with JD Fields’ previous acquisition of Alameda Pipe & Fab, advances their vision of becoming a fully integrated player in the steel manufacturing space—one capable of offering end-to-end solutions from fabrication to delivery.
Dean Abbondanza, JD Fields’ Director of Engineering, emphasized how the move responds to changing market conditions: “We see the U.S. piling market shifting toward ‘Buy American’ to ensure future availability, deliveries, and costs.”
